Eclectic Boca Raton musician Mike Mineo is up to his old tricks again. We got word this week that the gifted singer-songwriter had completed his sophomore album, titled Beach Season. According to Mineo, the record pays homage to the "South Florida native" way of life. Oddly enough, his inspiration for the record was the harsh cold weather he faced when traveling the nation last winter on the wares of his debut record, Eccentricity.
Mineo tells us after dealing with the icy conditions up north, and hearing so many people "bitch" about it, he decided to encapsulate a bit of sunshine into an album. Listening to the leadoff single "Vacation," we would say mission accomplished, Mr. Mineo.
Beginning with jittery guitar strums and carefree oohs and ahs hooks, this track certainly runs several shades of tropical. We guarantee by the time Mineo reaches his satisfying chorus about a minute in, listeners will be overtaken with an insatiable urge for a Corona or a fruity concoction with an umbrella in it.
Mineo hones in on the worldly buffet of sounds heard on his last effort and narrows his scope to the sand and surf. His appreciation for afro-pop rhythms here will undoubtedly garner him Vampire Weekend -- or Paul Simon's Graceland before them -- comparisons. We'll just call it Palm Beach Soweto for now.
Beach Season will make its debut at the Funky Buddha in Boca Raton on July 22, where there will be a $10 cover which includes a copy of the new album. And, just in time for summer break, Mineo has made "Vacation" available on iTunes.
Can't wait until July? Well, you don't have too, Mineo is taking the stage at Kahuna Bar & Grill in Deerfield Beach this Saturday at 10 p.m. Enjoy "Vacation" live whilst sipping on Kahuna's famous Red Bull Hurricane, how perfect would that be?
