For fans of that very West Coast low-end, post-hip-hop sound, here's the latest producer for you to love: MiMOSA, or Tigran MiMOSA depending on which of his internet sites you happen to click. He's got the hometown and adopted-hometown credentials down pat, having come up in the Bay Area scene before moving south to Los Angeles, where he's now based.
From there, he's been not-so-quietly releasing a steady stream of
tracks that fit right in with a particular underground electronic music
zeitgeist. All of these are deep and bass-heavy but, luckily, melodic
and without relying on the kind of hacksaw wobbles that are so popular.
Some tracks, like "Sanctuary," which you can download via his Facebook page, are dubby and sparse, veering toward synthy, slinky future bass and garage sounds. Others are glitchy, stuttering slabs that dangle somewhere left field of post-hip-hop and postdubstep. (That's lots of posts.)
Unsurprisingly, he's played with artists like Flying Lotus, Pretty Lights, Glitch Mob, and Bassnectar, crisscrossing over both the vaguely hippieish livetronica scene as well as the bass-head underground. Now he's making a run at headliner status himself, following up a tour this past March with a new cross-country run. That means he'll be appearing twice in South Florida over the next two weeks.
The first comes with a headlining show at Revolution this Thursday, March 15, supported by GRiZ. The second is a slot at the sold-out Ultra Music Festival, where he'll play the first night on Friday, March 23.
