It won't be long before Black Friday and Cyber Monday are joined by Overdraft Tuesday and Refinance Wednesday and Bankruptcy Thursday, so it's grand that our corporate parent today offers up a Daily Deal that we can endorse. eMusic is like the iTunes for vinyl enthusiasts. Although some of its indie-label clout was chopped in recent years as majors joined the fold, there is no spot on the web to read such insightful commentary about the music you're just about to buy.
Many of the finest writers this side of Rolling Stone, Spin, and Village Voice Media contribute regularly to eMusic's editorial holdings, and every genre gets a fair shake. A quick perusal through recent releases and markdowns yields myriad ways to spend $35 (while actually only spending $10) on the site. Here are a few suggestions.
Rihanna - Talk That Talk ($6.99)
People need Rih-Rih in their life. Especially when driving home at 5:45 a.m. from a noise-rock show with absolutely no discernible lyrics, it's time to keep awake by listening to something that's easy to sing along to. Plus it's equalized and optimized for your car stereo.
Les Savy Fav - Inches ($4.99)
This is just smart shopping. Although you'll eventually want every Les Savy Fav album, get all of the epic crunch of this RISD-bred postpunk outfit in this riotous singles collection. Here's "The Sweat Descends" set to a bunch of surfing and Tron: Legacy clips. We don't get it either, but it works somehow.
Kate Bush - 50 Words for Snow ($8.24)
Admittedly, we're still figuring out this brand-new album. It's a delicate listen, but don't call it a comeback. Know that Big Boi from Outkast is a fan. Why is she not bigger in the U.S. of A?
Ty Segall - Singles 2007-2010 ($6.99)
This San Francisco scuzz rocker never lets up! In the past three years, Ty Segall has recorded more songs than the Stooges have in their entire history. We'd be remiss not to mention that Melted, the Bruise Cruise vet's studio album of last year, is also a delight. But this is 25 garage nuggets in one package. Cop it!
Betty Wright - Betty Wright: The Movie ($6.99)
Holy shit! If you didn't know that Miami soul legend Betty Wright is still in the biz, now you know. It's called The Movie, because this is epic. Wisely, the 57-year-old with more pipes than the Home Depot has hooked up with the Roots -- yes, those Roots -- for her latest album. Here's her collaboration with Lil Wayne, but be sure to hear "Old Songs" if you want something traditional yet fresh.
