Alex Markow has worked for New Times photographing concerts for years and recently he's taken up concept photography and DJ-ing. Eric Perna runs the Beat Cup Cafe -- which is attached to the Salon Resta next door. So, the fact that Markow will be heading up the Rendezvous: Art and Music Show Friday night isn't just fitting, it was borderline inevitable.
"It's cool, they have the salon right next door. It's got the artsy, cool, hip vibe to it. They've been getting a really good following. They do drum circles and jam nights. They're just really cool guys. My girlfriend gets her hair cut next door and they actually have some of her art."
It was through his girlfriend, artist Lauren Shapiro that Markow met Perna. He shared one of his DJ mixes with Perna, and the rest is history.
"I've been a photographer for about five years, I shoot for New Times a lot, but I've been getting more into more into art and I've been wanting to do an art show for a while," says Markow. "I feel like Delray has a lot of old art very pop, beachy art but we wanted to show some more contemporary art." And, of course, to show off his new turntable skills alongside Mark Kincaid, ensuring no empty silences.
"Music-wise we're going to keep things a little more low key. We're gonna play some soul, then later on some indie dance and then Jonny Monsoon, he'll be going on at midnight. He's a rapper."
In addition to photo prints from Markow of both his concept art like this piece titled, Sitting on Time...
There will be plenty of art from other artists including Alan Stewart, Uzma Shareef, Sara Henick, and, of course, Lauren Shapiro who creates ceramic sculptures. All of the art on display will be for sale, giving you a great opportunity to buy for kooky aunt a unique holiday present.
Local t-shirt company Barbarica will be on hand provided one-of-a-kind wearable creations and there will be art, so much art.
Rendezvous runs from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., Beat Cup Cafe, 660 Linton Blvd., Delray Beach. $5 cover and two for one drafts until 10 p.m. For more information, check out the Facebook event page.
