Scott Rothstein: "There Was a Lot of Marijuana Smoking Going On in My Office"

There's some pretty interesting stuff coming out of Scott Rothstein's mouth during his deposition in Miami, like his claim that the Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler law firm was full of potheads.

For whatever reason, attorney Sam Rabin wanted to know about Rothstein's drug use during his Ponzi expedition, to which Rothstein claimed he just smoked some weed and took prescription medication.

"So when you're saying you talked about drug use... sex and drugs, the only drug you're talking about that you used is marijuana?" Rabin asked, according to the court transcript.

Rothstein clarified that his drug use only involved smoking a little weed on the weekends with his wife.

Rabin went on to ask if Rothstein ever did any drugs with his investors or co-conspirators.

"No, actually, never," Rothstein said. "Actually, I had a lot of opportunities to because there was a lot of marijuana smoking going on in my office, but it wasn't something -- I prefer to drink vodka."

Of course, Rabin wanted to clarify that lawyers and other RRA employees were just strollin' around the office smoking weed.

"In the office, in the garage, outside the office, I had some partners that couldn't come to work without smoking pot," Rothstein said. "I also found out they were actually dealing drugs in the office. I actually tried to put a stop to that."

Rothstein explained that he wasn't upset about the weed just for the sake of it being weed; it was just that he had a $1.2 billion scam to run.

"I didn't want to draw attention," he said. "You don't want to have marijuana dealing from the middle of your law office because I was running a giant Ponzi scheme out of there."

Rothstein was then asked why he allowed prostitutes to visit the office, but he got angry about the weed:

You're missing the point. The police also were sleeping with my escorts. You, obviously -- listen, Broward Sheriff's Office, Fort Lauderdale Police Department weren't going to bother me, OK; I could have had all the escorts I wanted.

Pot, not a great idea in the office, I don't know why, specifically, it bothered me; but it troubled me, probably because they were actually dealing the pot out of the office while I was in the middled [sic] of running a several-hundred-million-dollar Ponzi scheme.
