Here's what's new in Broward and Palm Beach:
- The Dolphins unveiled a $250 million renovation of Land Shark Stadium that includes a "translucent" roof to protect fans from the possibility of rain. It would have cost more, but the builders got a great deal from a Chinese manufacturer... [Miami Herald]
- A new batch of environmental tests in the interminable search for what's causing the cancer cluster in The Acreage. Those tests will try to determine whether the radioactive gas radon is present in homes. [Palm Beach Post]
- A Broward County jury sentenced Ralston "Jay" Davis to death Thursday after a trial in which he was found guilty of a December 2, 2005, murder spree. Davis used an AR-15 assault rifle to kill a woman in a Lauderhill apartment, then the same rifle to murder a two men near the Swap Shop. [Sun-Sentinel]
- A look at some of the items up for bid in the Scott Rothstein auction January 23. [WPLG]
- Officials who run the Palm Beach County morgue blame the economy for a surge in the numbers of dead bodies awaiting burial. "Says one of those officials: "We're sitting with 26 bodies; right now, we only have 21 carts, which means we're going to have to either double or rack bodies." Another possibility: The zombies are building an army. [WPTV]
- A Florida court ruled that text messages are "transitory" and that since they couldn't be stored, they are not subject to public record law. But that legal battle will continue. Expect a victory for public disclosure at roughly the time text messages become an obsolete mode of communication. [Sun-Sentinel]
