Crime stats are always figuring into the decisions people make about where to lay their heads. The folks at the website Homesecurityshield.net have done everyone a solid by doing a state-by-state breakdown of each of that particular 50's most dangerous municipalities. The Sunshine State edition has just hit the internet, and you might be surprised how many Broward and Palm Beach county locales are on the list.
The listing is based on the data released by the FBI, both violent offenses and property crimes. These stats are then crunched based on the population in each of the respective cities. Topping the list is Miami Beach, which, according to the website's analysis, means residents have a one in nine chance of becoming the victim of a violent crime in the city; for every 1,000 Miami Beach residents, there are 109 crimes.
In Broward, Fort Lauderdale racked up the highest ranking, coming in at number seven. That breaks down to 68 crimes per 1,000 residents and means that in the city, you have a one in 15 chance of becoming the victim of a violent offense.
The rest of the local locations to make the list are as follows: Pompano Beach came it at 11th, with 64 crimes per 1,000 residents, or a one-in-16 chance of becoming a victim of a violent offense; Riviera Beach at 13th, with 62 per 1,000 and a one-in-16 chance of violent crime; Lake Worth at 14th, with 61 per 1,000 and again one-in-16 for violent crime; West Palm Beach at 15th, 61 per 1,000 and one-in-16; Oakland Park at 16th, 61 per 1,000, one-in-16; and 19th is Lauderdale Lakes, 60 per 1,000 and one-in-17.
In total, seven out of the 20 top dangerous cities in Florida are in either Broward or Palm Beach. If you throw Miami-Dade in there as well, the grand total of South Florida municipalities on the list is 11 -- more than half.
Should we surprised? South Florida obviously was going to have a big footprint on this list due to the fact that it's one of the state's most populous regions. But interestingly, although Orlando and Daytona Beach are also big winners on the ranking, a large number of Florida larger metro areas are noticeably absent -- including Tampa, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and Gainesville.
