With the heavy focus the craft beer community has on barrel-aged, soured, and multihopped beers, it's refreshing to take a moment and explore a style that's built upon a solid foundation of simplicity. World of Beer, a Florida-based beer bar that offers hundreds of different beers at its trendy establishments, is seeking to bring some education to the masses with a month devoted to the light, clean, and crisp beer style known as the pilsner. Or pilsener. Or pils. A rose by any other name, we say.

On now and lasting through March, World of Beer locations throughout South Florida will focus on the pilsner beer style, offering unique events and opportunities for curious drinkers.

Centering on the classic Czech pils, Pilsner Urquell, WOB will offer a beer flight featuring three methods of pouring the beer into the glass. It is traditional to vary the pour method to change the mouthfeel of this type of beer, and a special spout will be onsite to lend this ability. Pours include crème (three fingers of head, a classic Czech pour), slice (light, sweet foam fills 3/4 of the glass), and sweet (all foam, bringing out the beer's sweet maltiness).

In addition, a second flight will feature four pilsner styles from around the world: Czech, German, American, and the bartender's choice. WOB loyalty club members who partake in these flights will be entered for a chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Plzen via their mobile app.

Finally, on March 12, there will be a special tapping of the original unfiltered, unpasteurized Pilsner Urquell beer. This is a uniquely rare event, as kegs of this beer are typically available only in the Czech Republic and will be express-shipped to the United States.

"Our 'Journey Through Pilsners' event is the first of many one-of-a-kind craft beer experiences we have in store for our guests in 2015," World of Beer CEO Paul Avery said in a news release.

Again, the educational opportunity has begun at World of Beer locations in our area, such as WOB Coconut Creek and WOB Wellington.
