We all know that Joan Jett loves rock n' roll. But she also loves animals and the environment. Jett, a vegetarian for about 20 years, unveiled her new PETA add Sunday afternoon as part of a campaign to spread awareness of vegetarianism. The unveiling took place at Sublime in Fort Lauderdale and included music legends Jett, Iggy Pop, and television host Marco Antonio Regil.

Pop was invited to present Jett -- a longtime animal rights activist -- with the Nanci Alexander Activist award. The award is named after the Sublime owner and founder of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida: Nanci Alexander.

We spoke to Pop about his involvement with the event, "I'm not a vegetarian, but I'm evolved eater and have been aware of these sorts of issues since the '60s. I came out today because I'm a huge fan of Joan [Jett] and I really want to show my support. When they asked, there was no way I wasn't going to attend."

Jett switched to a vegetarian diet after reading John Robbins Diet for a New America. She was horrified to learn about all of the hidden processes in the industrial food system. Her concerns stem not just from the abusive treatment of animals in the system, but also the environmental concerns associated with meat production. She cites the meat industry as being one of the largest contributors of greenhouse gases and uses the recent catastrophe of Hurricane Sandy as an example of the negative impacts of the overall impact of climate change.

Television host Marco Antonio Regil also received an award at the event. PETA President Ingrid Newkirk presented him with PETA's "one can make a difference" award for his efforts to promote veganism. Regil recently performed the voice over for the Spanish version of Glass Walls--a PETA exposé of the meat industry.
