There once was a point in history in which Americans would don their finery every day of the week.
Not anymore -- especially, in South Florida.
These days, we're lucky to see someone in an entire outfit without undergarments or butt cheeks hanging out (whether you appreciate the lack of clothing is another matter, obviously).
That being said, we still have one day of the year for which we save our Sunday best. And no, we're not taking about the Lord's day -- few even get dressed up to go to church anyway.
It's the Kentucky Derby. And it's taking place on Saturday.
So, pull out your sundresses, suspenders, seersucker, and splendid hats. It's time to dress to the nines and drink bourbon all day.

Tap 42, Fort Lauderdale
Sponsored by Maker's Mark, Tap's third annual Get Down and Derby Party is starting at 3:30 p.m. As part of the festivities, the bar is offering $5 mint juleps with Maker's 46, along with other specials, and a variety of race related games (think horseshoes, etc.). The bar is offering first, second, and third prizes for best derby attire and outrageous hat contests.
III Forks Prime Steakhouse, Hallandale Beach and Palm Beach Gardens
To celebrate the race, these steakhouses are offering a special derby day drink. The Creole Mint Julep ($13) is made with Maker's 46, house-made simple syrup, fresh mint leaf, creole seasonings, and soda. The restaurant opens at 4 p.m.
Blue Martini Lounge, All locations
Racing fans are taking over the back deck of the high-end bar; it's offering all day specials on mint juleps. In addition to plenty of cocktails, the celebrations include a Kentucky Derby Hat Contest. Blue Martini judges are deciding on the best and biggest Southern-inspired hat for a grand prize at the end of the evening.
Gulfstream Park, Hallandale Beach
This race park is honoring the day with one of the biggest parties in all of South Florida. To go along with the bets, it's offering souvenirs to commemorate the day. With every mint julep ($8) and Stella Artois ($5), get a free derby glass. It's also offering attire and hat contests and prizes. For food, Ten Palms is featuring an all-you-can-eat buffet for $32.99 and the Fountain Club is offering a special prix fixe menu for $27.99.
Murphy's Law, Hollywood
For those looking to find a charitable way to enjoy the derby, this Seminole Hard Rock bar is hosting 6th Annual Rock the Race - A Kentucky Derby Bash to raise funds for the Ann Storck Center (it impacts children and adults in its Adult Day Training Program, Early Intervention Preschool, Intermediate Care Facilities, and the Therapeutic Art and Music Programs). For $50 per person, $85 per couple, the event includes live entertainment, mint juleps, hors d'oeuvres, silent auction, and best dressed and best hat contests. It takes place from 4 to 8 p.m. Visit annstorckcenter.org.
