Sure there's crime everywhere, but it takes a truly soulless character to steal from a Girl Scout.
Nevertheless, that's what happened this past Sunday, February 9, when two teens robbed a troop of Girl Scouts selling cookies outside the Winn Dixie at 3260 Davie Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.
That's right. A troop of Girl Scouts. Selling cookies. Were robbed.
Good job, Florida!
According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the incident happened around 7:55 p.m., "while a group of Girl Scouts were selling cookies outside this establishment, two unknown suspects approached the girls and the adult supervising them. When one suspect distracted the group, the other took a cell phone that was lying on their cookie sales table." The suspects then ran away through the parking lot, toward Davie Blvd.
According to CBS News, the cell phone belonged to the 10-year-old Girl Scout who was sitting with her head down because she didn't feel well, when the two suspects snatched her cell phone. Cookies might have been stolen, as well.
Detectives identified the suspects using the store's surveillance video, determining they were also involved in previous incidents in the area. The alleged perpetrator -- listed on the police report as a ninth grader at Plantation High School -- was taken into custody and charged with one count of grand larceny. He later confessed to taking the phone. The other suspect was not charged.
None of the Girl Scouts were harmed. The cookies, if any were stolen, were not recovered.
