Join Craft Beer Cartel, Wynwood Brewing, and Yoga Gangsters for an End of Summer Brew Competition

What goes best with beer? Is it popcorn? Pretzels? Chicken wings?

Scratch all of those. According to Julien Siegel, co-owner of Fort Lauderdale's Craft Beer Cartel, yoga and beer are the best pairing.

When Craft Beer Cartel opened last year offering a plethora of homebrewing equipment, craft beer, and — very important — abundant parking, it only made sense to transition nearby Riverside Market’s signature End of Summer Home Brew event to the new space, says Siegel.

"Just think: fame, fortune, and getting to brew in a real production brewery. We're making all your craft beer dreams come true."

Now, it's the official location for his beer bar and restaurant's second-annual End of Summer Home Brew Competition, which has expanded its reach this year by partnering with Miami-based Yoga Gangsters, a nonprofit organization the mission of which is to "empower youth by addressing the symptoms of trauma and poverty through the practice of yoga."

This weekend, in addition to sampling a variety of craft beer, event attendees can sign up for a 75-minute yoga class taking place in Riverside Park directly preceding the home brewing festivities. The $25 entry fee includes the yoga class, entry to the homebrew competition, and one People’s Choice vote. For those less flexible, a $15 ticket scores you access to the homebrew competition only.

As incentive for all homebrewers to showcase their brews, the final winner of the competition — judge’s choice only — will have the opportunity to brew the winning craft beer at Wynwood Brewing, located in the Wynwood artist district of Miami. Homebrewers can sign up to compete online here for $20. The entry fee covers two beer entries. There is a $10 charge for each additional beer to be judged.

Of homebrew competitions past, Siegel said that it's no surprise that many of his former contestants and winners are now professional brewers, and many even own local breweries.

"And now, this year's winner will get to brew with Wynwood Brewing," adds Siegel. "Just think: fame, fortune, and getting to brew in a real production brewery. We're making all your craft-beer dreams come true."

The End of Summer Home Brew will start at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, September 19. Yoga starts at 4 p.m. Craft Beer Cartel is located at 557 SW 12th Ave., Fort Lauderdale. For more information, visit
