Florida Beer: 42 Truths American Pale Ale From Funky Buddha and Tap 42

Every week, we take a look at a craft beer brewed in Florida. Follow #FloridaBeerFriday for more reviews of Sunshine State brews. Get out there and #DrinkLocal.

The inspiration for 42 Truths American Pale Ale from Funky Buddha, brewed exclusively for Tap 42, comes from the ancient Egyptians.

The Forty-Two Declarations of Purity is codified in an ancient Egyptian text. It's a collection of moral principles quite in keeping with Funky Buddha Brewery's general theme of enlightenment.

This special collaboration brew will be available only at the brewery and at Tap 42's Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton locations. I was lucky to sample it at the Funky Buddha Craft Counter & Kitchen preview event. Unfortunately, the rest of you will have to wait until Tuesday (November 17).

According to the latest Beer Judge Certification's 2015 style guidelines, an American Pale Ale should be "a pale, refreshing, and hoppy ale, yet with sufficient supporting malt to make the beer balanced and drinkable. The clean hop presence can reflect classic or modern American or New World hop varieties with a wide range of characteristics. An average-strength hop-forward pale American craft beer, generally balanced to be more accessible than modern American IPAs."

It pours golden, with an inch thick white crown. The aromas are juicy orange, like the scent left on your fingers after peeling the rind off an orange. There's a subtle play between bitter and citrus from the addition of fresh orange Florida orange peel. Flavors here are balanced and inoffensive, well-suited to being paired with any number of Tap 42's incredible menu of invigorated bar foods. It finishes crisp and clean, with some bready malt backbone.

As John Linn, brand director of the brewery, states, "The idea to add orange peel came from wanting to connect this beer distinctly with Florida, while also making the flavor addition subtle enough as not to overwhelm people. We think it works."

42 Truths comes in at 5.55 percent alcohol by volume and is set to be released Tuesday, November 17, at the Tap 42 Fort Lauderdale location, at 1411 S. Andrews Ave,, Fort Lauderdale, and Thursday, November 19, at the Tap 42 Boca Raton location at Town Center Circle in Boca Raton.
