This Saturday, March 5, the City of Coral Springs, Florida, is hosting a public rally to raise awareness about Bob Levinson.

Levinson, a 33-year veteran of the FBI, went missing in Iran in 2007. His family long wondered whether he was dead or alive, but perhaps because of last year's Iranian nuclear deal and less-icy relations with the Islamic Republic, hope seems possible again.  Last year, the FBI raised the award for information about him from $1 million to $5 million. Levinson will be 68 next week.

Levinson went to Iran in 2007. The government has said he was working as a private investigator for corporations, but the family has said he was working for the CIA, though they long kept that detail secret so as not to put him in jeopardy. Investigations showed that officials characterized the mission as an unauthorized one orchestrated by people who were not in a position to have sent spies to Iran.  The family received photos and video of Levinson in 2010, but has heard nothing since. Iran leaders insist he is not in their custody.

New Times examined Levinson's case in a cover story two years ago, examining why the father of seven, once called a "Jewish James Bond," took the risk of traveling to Iran with no backup when he had already achieved success in his career.  Interviews with friends and family suggest the agent had something of a midlife crisis. The CIA connection was uncovered in emails that were discovered when a paralegal working for Levinson's wife improbably hacked into his Gmail account. In our story, the paralegal detailed her experience.

U.S. Reps. Ted Deutch and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen spoke in Congress this week asking for the House to adopt a resolution supporting the rally for Levinson.
The Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI (SFSAFBI) is sponsoring Saturday's event. Members of Congress and local government leaders and law enforcement officers are expected.

The event will take place at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts, 2855 Coral Springs Drive.

Following the rally, the Levinson Family will gather at WingsPlus, 9880 Sample Road, Coral Springs.
