If the concept of an ice cream bar -- that is, a bar erected for the sole purpose of selling ice cream -- doesn't sound like the perfect end to a night out, then I question your patriotism. An ice cream bar is just one of the highlights of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival's opening-night festivities, running from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach. For the first time, FLIFF's opening night will not include a film screening; the night is all about nosh, drinks, and revelry, with ticket holders welcome to enjoy an open bar, silent auction, and dishes from six top area restaurants, including Brio Tuscan Grille and III Forks (see page 20). This event is solely for deep-pocketed cinephiles, with tickets priced at $75 for FLIFF members and $100 for nonmembers. The rest of us can enjoy the flurry of films screening at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale), Muvico Pompano 18 (2315 N. Federal Highway, Pompano Beach), and Sunrise Civic Center Theater (10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Sunrise) from Saturday through November 11. The official FLIFF opener will be The Sapphires, a musical comedy about an aboriginal singing group in the Vietnam era, screening at 7 p.m. Saturday at Muvico Pompano 18.
