The New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band will perform this weekend as part of the foundation's returning Broward concert series.
James Quinlan, the foundation's director, says the initial four-year programming was of great value to the local community both culturally and financially. But the production partners and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency, the project's sponsor, turned their attention to other ventures and the contract expired. Meanwhile, the foundation took on the management of the North Beach Bandshell in Miami Beach in 2015, transforming it into a full-time operation with an expansive schedule of concerts and festivals. The returning Hollywood concert series is being funded by the Hollywood CRA again.
The revamped Hollywood series of free, spring concerts, which presents a large sampling of traditional world music styles as well as contemporary artists with distinctive regional sounds, opened last weekend with a show by Los Angeles band Chicano Batman. Colombian ensemble Monsieur Periné will take the stage on Saturday, June 15th, and pianist, composer and arranger Chucho Valdés's Jazz Batá will close out the season on Saturday, June 22. Emerging local talent will open for the main acts.
Benton Galgay, director of operations, noted that the eclectic lineup underscores the Rhythm Foundation's mission. "Ultimately what we do is try to bridge community divided by cultural differences," he explains, adding that the gatherings inspire loyalty from performers and audiences alike. "What people do after is follow our work throughout South Florida and join in that building of new relationships throughout the community through the love of music."
