V-Day doesn't mean it's February 14 and you need to find someone willing to buy you a dozen roses and shitty Walgreens chocolates before a stroll into that restaurant that you never really liked anyway. It's not even just a day -- V-Day is a movement. It demands that violence against women and girls must end. Every year during February, March, and April, female-focused, nonprofit, and antiviolence groups around the country embrace the V-Day message to educate their community. One of these ways is holding performances of the Vagina Monologues. That's correct, the Vagina Monologues equals awareness. It's actually the entire reason the irreverent performance exists. The award-winning play uses humor and storytelling to celebrate women's sexuality and, in turn, strength. The upcoming performance in Fort Lauderdale has proceeds going directly to Women in Distress, Broward County's only certified, full-service, domestic-violence shelter for women and children. Grab your gals for a chance to laugh and at the same time raise money for a crucial part of the community. Sounds like the most important girls' night of all time. V-Day Fort Lauderdale's Vagina Monologues is Saturday at 3 p.m. at the World and Eye Arts Center, located at 109 NW Fifth St. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $25 plus fees.
