Sticking around town for Labor Day and dreading Tuesday morning, when you'll have to listen to that jerk from sales brag about his awesome weekend spent hanging on the deck of Lady Gaga's space yacht helping Beyoncé choose a baby name? Honestly, the only thing worse than returning to work after a three-day weekend is going back in knowing you frittered the days away organizing your takeout menus and watching a marathon (or even a minute) of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Although it may not be a pool party at the Playboy Mansion or a getaway to some swank beach house, there are cool things happening in Broward and Palm Beach counties this weekend and at very affordable prices. You can start tonight by stopping by for Beer, Bacon & Bourbon night at Market 17 in Fort Lauderdale, where you'll find $3 craft beer, $3 bourbon, and all kinds of bacon treats. Listed below are six other food and drink events happening this weekend:
Food Trucks at East Village Uncorked -- The food-truck-ifying of South Florida continues as Gourmet Truck Expo teams with East Village Uncorked
to bring ten or so gourmet food trucks to the event, which
already includes food from 15 local restaurants and winetastings in
participating shops. Some of the vendors expected to roll up for the
evening include Cheese Me, Curbside Gourmet, and Kona Ice. The event is 6
to 9 p.m. in Harbor Village and Atlantic Square Shopping Center in
Food trucks at the yacht club -- In the Sure, Why the Hell Not? book of matchups this weekend, we have a handful of food trucks making an appearance at the Lauderdale Isles Yacht & Tennis Club, 2637 Whale Harbor Lane in Fort Lauderdale. You don't need to be a member to partake, and it's being billed as a family event and open to the public. The action starts at 11 a.m., and at least six trucks are on-board, including Catered Bliss, Truckin' Good Pizza, and Moty's Grill.
Chili Cook-Off at Whole Foods -- If you've got the steel nerves necessary to handle a weekend trip to the Boca Raton Whole Foods Market, you will be rewarded with a chance to play judge in a storewide chili cook-off from noon to 3 p.m. You don't need to register to participate, simply fight your way through what can be a very intense group -- hey, when those superprimped ladies want their post-Pilates smoothie and quinoia fix, they want it now, damn it -- and vote on which store department did it best.
Vegan poetry reading -- Call it the antithesis of the meaty and beachy debauchery sure to come Monday, as the hordes head out to mark Labor Day with grilled animal flesh and partying under the sun. The evening reading at Sublime will include verse by vegan poet M. "Butterflies" Katz, who will also sign copies of her book Metamorphosis -- yours to keep for the $20 entry fee. The reading is 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and an animal-product-free glass of wine (or nonbooze beverage, should you choose) will be served.
Labor Day pig roast and barbecue -- Nothing says three-day weekend like spending your Monday morning working on nothing more than expanding the size of your waistline. Muddy Water Restaurant and Raw Bar is hosting a pig roast and barbecue from 11 a.m. on with drink specials and an insane amount of very meaty food. Grab your buddies, leave your vegetarian daughter at home, and celebrate the fact that you don't have to clock in till tomorrow.
Free pizza and grand opening celebration -- A day off and free stuff? It's like getting out of speeding ticket on your way to collect a raffle prize: double score. Nick's New Haven-Style Pizzeria & Bar in Boca Raton will mark its grand opening by handing out free slices of apizza (not an atypo, by the way) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Limit one per person, so don't get greedy all up in there.
