This nook tucked in a retro-shopping plaza that also houses Undergrounds Coffeehaus and Hi-Life Cafe is the kind of place
to take your mother or aunt to for a light breakfast, lunch, or afternoon
tea. Mismatched tables, window dressings, hardwood floors, and area
rugs shape a space that feels like a shabby-chic home.
Opened in June 2010 by
Sheryl Mauro, Hibiscus Cafe features sandwiches named after
friends, such as Jodi's Favorite, with turkey, goat cheese, and pesto
on a tomato panini; or Kathy's Favorite crabcake. Comfort food makes an
appearance in homemade soup such as cheddar corn chowder
or Southwestern black bean.
For breakfast, try the
migas of eggs, jalapeño, cheddar, crumbled chips, and salsa or an egg-and-cheese croissant that's made in-house. Mauro throws occasional Friday
happy hours, which
you can learn about should you connect with Hibiscus Cafe on Facebook, for which she offers Prosecco, craft beers, and homemade sweets and savories. Mauro also offers a nightly dinner to go. Call ahead to place an order and pick up by 6 p.m. Last night featured
Hibiscus Cafe, 3000 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-533-7224. Open 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
