So; Isaac was a real party pooper, huh? Sure, the tropical storm didn't live up to the hype, but it still managed to rain on more than one parade last week, which means a few events were rescheduled for this weekend. It's all good, though, with a three-day weekend in front of you, there's plenty of time to shake off the cabin fever and get into a little trouble. After the jump, find a list of food and drink events happening in Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach County, Pompano Beach, and beyond. Oh, and happy Labor Day.
1. Flavor Palm Beach
Sick of hearing about how cool Miami Spice is? Well, Palm Beach County -- stodgy as its reputation may be at times -- has its own entry in the eat-on-the-cheap-at-good-restaurants genre. Flavor Palm Beach is a month-long, county-wide restaurant event that gives diners a chance to get a meal at a decent-to-great restaurant (some of them are OK, some are excellent) for a fixed price; $20 for lunch and $30 or $35 for dinner. The menus are prix fixe and choices run from Cafe Chardonnay in Palm Beach Gardens south to Sundy House in Delray Beach. The promotion starts on Saturday and continues through September 30. 2. Labor Day food truck roundup at casino
The food truck is the working man's passport to a world of exotic (or, in some cases semi exotic) flavors. So it's only fitting that Labor Day weekend should see the gathering of the trucks for a free event at Seminole Casino of Hollywood. From 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday, 11 trucks will roll into the casino's parking lot. You don't need to pay to get in, but you must be 21 years or older. And of course, bring cash for your meal(s). Some of the trucks on offer that night include B.C. Tacos, Che Grill, The Rolling Stove, and Dolce Gourmet Cupcakes.
3. Sunday brunch options
Sunday is typically a day of recovery, but with Monday as a vacation day, it's important to keep your energy up for an extra day of partying. Brunch is critical in this effort. In addition to the myriad options available to you in Broward and Palm Beach counties, there are a few special options to note this weekend. First, the SunTrust Sunday Jazz Brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. gives a casual, outdoor opportunity for eating and listening to live music. Hang out with your friends and your dog (as long as he's well-behaved and on a leash), and listen to three different acts during the free event. Bring a picnic basket or grab a meal at one of the nearby restaurants. The event is held on the Riverwalk in Fort Lauderdale.
Also on Sunday, Salt7 in Delray Beach will debut a new brunch menu with additions like French toast with bananas and dulce de leche maple syrup, watermelon tomato salad, eggs Benedict with chipotle hollandaise, and, of course, cocktails.
4. Food truck roundups on Saturday
The Festival Flea Market Mall will host its bi-monthly food truck rally from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Pompano Beach mall. There are 20 trucks scheduled to appear, including On the Slide, Catered Bliss, Hip Pops, Mangia Mia, and The Mad Scientists. There's no cost to attend, but bring cash for the trucks. The event also includes entertainment and family-friendly attractions.
Meanwhile, the crew from Gourmet Food Trucks will be over at New Horizon United Methodist Church (5741 S. Flamingo Road in Southwest Ranches) from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday for a food truck rally to support the church's youth group canned good drive. Show up with a canned item and help the kids out, and buy some food truck eats while you're at it. This is a rescheduled event; the original date was "tropical stormed" out last Saturday.
5. Blue Moon Fish Company's blue moon party
You could celebrate tonight's blue moon with a bowl of that weird blue moon ice cream -- what the hell flavor is that, by the way? -- or try something a little more upscale at the Blue Moon Fish Company's Blue Moon Party. Starting at 10 p.m. there will be tapas, cocktails, and live music.
