Today, June 1, is the highly celebrated national doughnut day.
While you may think that it's one of those recently made up holidays by some National Doughnut Council, the holiday was actually started in 1938 by the Salvation Army to honor the women who served doughnuts to U.S. soldiers during World War I. It's been celebrated ever since -- which makes it your patriotic duty to eat a doughnut today!
Both Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme are giving away free doughnuts today.

Everyone loves these little baked or fried pastries that so conveniently
fit onto your finger, so to celebrate, Clean Plate Charlie is listing

Man Vs. Food Voodoo Doll Doughnut

Richman's got a pretty good gig. For his Travel Channel show Man Vs. Food, He travels the country, eating.
That's it. He just eats. Of course, he's probably got a slew of
prescription medication that he has to take for everything from high
blood pressure to diabetes...but still, if your job is just eating chili
and doughnuts -- can you really complain? When Richman travels to
Portland in search of a nosh, he encounters the Voodoo Doughnut, a
jelly-filled doll so delicious, it's almost devilish.
Paula Deen's The Lady's Brunch Burger
Since her declaration that she has diabetes, the chef and Food Network
celebrity has toned down her act a bit, actually cooking (gasp) heart
healthy meals. But back in her butter-induced coma days, Ms. Deen made
the Lady's brunch burger, basically a bacon cheeseburger with fried egg on a Krispy
Kreme. Anthony Bourdain is still pissed.
Katy Perry
What
do you do when you have to fit into teeny little costumes (or just body
paint) for your numerous music videos and love doughnuts? Katy Perry's
answer is obvious -- don't eat it - wear it.
Perry explained her odd behavior via (what else?), Twitter, where she told the world,

GIANT doughnut pillow @kidrobot NYC & it wouldn't fit in any of my
bags. When gettin off plane it was the best paparrazzi shield." [sic]
Homer Simpson
No list of celebrities and their doughnuts would be complete without Homer Simpson. When he's not drinking beer, he's scarfing down the sugary treats at an alarming rate. In fact, in one of the famous Treehouse of Horror episodes, Homer actually became a doughnut. Be careful what you wish for.
Brad Pitt
Sure - you might think of Pitt as an actor, hottie,
or boy-toy/nanny to Angelina Jolie, but in actuality, he's a doughnut.

In a January, 2012 interview with The Hollywood
Reporter, Brad told the world his baked-goods past, "I was hiding out
from the celebrity thing, I was smoking way too much dope, I was sitting
on the couch and just turning into a doughnut and I really got
irritated with myself."
Perhaps Pitt was just practicing sense memory acting, "be the doughnut...be the doughnut..."
