No. 23: Aloo Pie From Lovey's Roti

This popular Trinidadian street food is not a pie, per se. It's actually made

of fried bread,

slit open like a sandwich and

filled with a spicy mixture of boiled potatoes, mango kulcha (a crunchy

kind of chutney), and hot

"peppa." At West Broward's Roti haven, Lovey's, the aloo pie is airy

and soft, with a crisp, papery crust thanks to

the expert frying. It hits on all the right notes: The potatoes are

moist and starchy, the kulcha tangy and garlicky, and the pepper hot

enough to blow your top. Plus, the pies are supercheap at only $2 a pop,

and portable, so you can take your aloo pie with you on the go.
