"Filter was a special band I alway respected because of Richard Patrick's gift of melody and interesting lyrics," says singer/songwriter Fernando Perdomo, whose Dreaming in Stereo act will open for Filter this Thursday at Revolution Live. Turns out, he's a big fan of the band. "One minute the band would be a wash of industrial noise," Perdomo says, "and then a 180 turn into a beautiful landscape of melody and shine would make for a breathtaking aural experience."
He's thrilled to be playing the stage with the band. Perdomo's sound may be a little softer, but that doesn't mean he doesn't know a thing or two about Filter's sound, past, and influence on his own music.
"Rock 'n' roll was thriving in the '90s in South Florida with 94.9 Zeta providing the soundtrack for the class of '98-'99, in most cases," he reminisces. "I was there at the Zetafest's, Bonzai's, and Nutcracker Balls along with at times 25,000 to 50,000 other people who believed in the power of rock 'n' roll."
Of Filter, Perdomo says, "They are still at it, and I can't wait to hear them live... especially these five songs."
"Where Do We Go From Here"
"Love the drum sound and the acoustic guitar as the primary instrument. The pre-chorus and chorus could not be an odder combination, but the total effect is mind-blowing," Perdomo observes.
"Take a Picture"
"Unforgettable song with a chord progression that inspired my style. Open strings and major 7s lead to a dreamy landscape of sound that puts you in a trance," notes Perdomo. "Richard Patrick's vocals have an amazing ability to soar, and the lyrics really get into your head."
"My Life Before"
"New album cut speaks to me. He speaks of wanting to press reset and start over again. Lyrically brilliant and well-arranged. It's amazing the power of Richard's voice here. Who else can be this melodic while screaming?" asks Perdomo.
"Welcome to the Fold"
"Powerful music with melody" is how the singer/songwriter describes this song. "At first, I was turned off by his rap-like delivery on the verse, but the chorus puts it into perspective... There are two characters in the song. Patrick is a method actor!"
"Goodbye" (by Army of Anyone)
"Technically not Filter, but the most I have been blown away by a song in the last few years was by this song," Perdomo explains. "Amazing chorus and melody, and the lyrics kill me. The album was great, and I hope they make more music together again. Buy Army of Anyone now. It is amazing."
