Trick or treat, smell our feet, give us something with a fat-ass beat.
That's what we were singing on our way into Revolution Live last night for a Halloween edition of Electrik Circus. Thankfully we weren't let down in the slightest.
There was none of that cheap, knock-off, dance floor bullshit. We left feeling more than satisfied, so there was no need to toilet paper any trees.
As soon as we walked in the door, we were greeted by the trunk-rattling bass of R. L. Grimes, one of the trappiest trappers in the game right now, not to mention one with a totally in-theme name for Halloween. He was laying down some sick hood beats and going straight ratchet behind the decks. For a minute, we were afraid he was going to break the table he was rockin' so hard.
The partiers were loving it, but even without the ill tracks, it would have been hard not to get caught up in the vibe. The place was decked out in a real spooktacular array of insanity; swirling hypno spheres, airy spiders' webs, nearly naked dancers, and just about everyone lookin' fresh in some really great costumes.
R. L. Grime went in on some Flosstradamus, Baauer, Dillon Francis. He even dropped Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River" which had all the girls on the floor freakin. But by 11:45, his time was almost up.
"By the way, make some noise for yourselves right now," he said into the mic as we killed it with T.I.'s "What You Know." "Thank you guys so fuckin' much."
Between DJs, the curtain was drawn just slightly, and some masked dancer dudes came out busting sick isolation moves to a wobbly remix of "Crave You." They kept the energy up as the revelers mingled and re-upped on their drinks.
"Are you ready for Felix Cartal?" someone asked after a few minutes. "I said, are you ready for Felix Cartal?"
The applause amped up and the curtain came back, revealing the Weekend Workout man all dressed up in a skunk hoodie. He went right into the dirty electro beats, building up the crowd as three very coordinated dancers took turns gyrating on stage.
"Yo, what's up Fort Lauderdale," he called. "Happy Halloween!"
His name flashed behind him as he played a little bit of everything. He was dropping dirty electro, trappin beats, a little bit of moombah and a bit of dubstep for good measure. Of course, he mixed in hits from his album "Black to White," and he was the lucky man who dropped Halloween mainstay "Thriller."
He played for a good hour and a half, totally rippin shit, and looking like he was having a ball. At 1:30 a.m., he said his final thank yous, I love yous and goodbyes and made some room for South Florida locals Brass Knuckles.
Again, there was a bit of poppin' and lockin' going on between the acts, but before too long, the super energetic threesome was live and in charge.
Brass Knuckles always deliver a party full of nostalgiac goodies and modern classics, but they do it with their own twist. When they dropped one of the year's biggest anthems, "Epic," they added their own live guitar to the track, pushing it over the edge of cool into totally awesome.
Like R.L. Grimes and Cartal before them, they were just plain having fun with their set, mixing Chuckie's "Who is Ready to Jump" with the similarly themed House of Pain favorite "Jump Around." And of course the crowd was vibing to their original nu-disco jam "Would I Lie To You."
It was a stellar end to a totally rad bash. The night was full of treats and the only things trickin' were the hoes. Pretty much exactly what you want from Halloween.
Critics Notebook
Personal Bias: R.L. Grimes really fuckin' brought it, so extra big ups to him. More people need to drop T.I. for real, though.
The Crowd: Young party people just looking to get down in some funky-ass get ups.
Best Drop: Of course, it has to be "Thriller." People rushed the dance floor for that one.
And Wouldn't You Know It: We didn't see one Psy. But we did definitely bust out the Gangnam moves.
