We had a good chuckle when we opened the email promoting Tri-Rail's "Senior Idol" competition being held at the Parker Playhouse on May 17. First off, since when did the South Florida Regional Rail Transportation Authority (the folks who run the local commuter rail line that links Miami to West Palm Beach) get in the concert promoting business? Seems like an odd fit to us.
Anyhow, the commuter line's American Idol for the AARP set will be composed of a dozen 65-and-over hopefuls vying for a $500 prize and a one-year pass on Tri-Rail. (Think of all the gas money they could save while wandering the tricounty area for the best early-bird specials.)
The evening will begin with a spirited performance from the Original Florida Follies -- a lively tap and jazz ensemble that's made up hot mature mamas (and some choice gents) who were all former New York and Las Vegas dancers, showgirls, choreographers, or dance teachers.
About the event, Bonnie Arnold, SFRTA's director of marketing, says, "This effort demonstrates Tri-Rail's commitment to the senior community and provides a platform to encourage seniors to remain healthy and active."

Perhaps one of the most tender melodies about growing old with someone you love, and a song that all these 65-plus contestants can sing with an ironic edge.
Lady Gaga - "Poker Face"
OK, work with us here. Although we realize that it's mostly bridge that's all the rage in retirement communities, we all know that retirement and card playing go together like orange-flavored Metamucil and a cold glass of water.
Pulp - "Help the Aged"
Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker's take on the inevitability of growing old. We can't run away from it; we are all (hopefully) going to end up there someday too.
LCD Soundsystem - "Losing My Edge"
James Murphy's mournful and sardonic tale of losing one's grip on hipness with age.
Puscifer - "Cuntry Boner"
This rather blunt ditty from the side project of Tool's Maynard James Keenan speaks to the perils of overusing the magical blue pill. Probably the least likely of the bunch, but just imagine.
