The 1920s-themed speakeasy, Stache, has been generating a lot of buzz lately that can be accredited to its laid-back concerts, cool vibe, and uniquely crafted cocktails. Tonight, the space once known as Green Room will be lit up for an entirely different reason. Stache is sponsoring the Special Olympics' benefit and blackjack tournament, Jack's Joint.
It may seem unlikely to find an event on Fort Lauderdale's Second Street that doesn't involve partying like a frat boy, but Steven Stepniewski, Special Olympics' Vice President of Resource Development, deemed Stache a totally appropriate venue for the fundraiser. "When we walked in, we thought it was a great place to have our event, in a Speakeasy atmosphere," Stepniewski said. "We knew it was the right venue for us."
Currently servicing 2,100 special needs children, the nonprofit organization allows participants to play 18 different sports for free. The goal of Jack's Joint is to be able to service an additional 400 kids by the end of the year and add new sports to the program, including gymnastics and standup paddleboard. To put things into monetary perspective, the goal of the fundraiser is to raise $50k to expand the program.
Stepniewski calls this night "a premiere" event and hopes "to help raise additional funds for Special Olympics in Broward County." And indeed, it is the first Jack's Joint to be held in town. And yes, the old-timey theme is in effect.
It'll feature an open bar and food from 7 to 10 p.m., provided by Stache. Entertainment for the evening will include cabaret dancers and Cat Shell as Kitty Carmichael singing some swing. And besides the blackjack tournament to bet your life on, there will be a live and silent auction to offer you the chance to give to a good cause. Entry for Jack's Joint is $85 and gives you $1,000 of "funny money" to play with. Don't fret if you can't make this event - the Special Olympics will host its ninth annual 5K on November 8, called Sallarulo 5K Run/Walk Race for Champions at Nova South Eastern University.
