The legendary Iggy Pop has been known to, well, pop up at events in South Florida, especially down in the 305. However, he has yet to be spotted hanging around downtown Fort Lauderdale. According to some rumors floating around, though, that just might change this weekend.
A source who prefers to remain anonymous told County Grind that it is going to happen Saturday night at the Poorhouse, sometime after midnight during the monthly Florida? Yeah! event put on by the Independent Working Artist Network. The Facebook event page for the show lists "Super Special Surprise Late Night Special Guests," but that's as specific as it gets.
When asked for comment, Yvonne Colon, co-owner of IWAN, claimed to have no knowledge of where the Iggy Pop rumor originated, but she likes it. "We were really excited and amused by the rumor. It would be freakin' awesome if Iggy Pop came. I think he is probably really nice."
Colon went on to say that she does know who the other, confirmed surprise guests are, but she wouldn't give up the names.
She did excitedly list off the names of the bands that will be performing at the party, though, which will celebrate the third anniversary of the Bubble, the warehouse facility of IWAN. Those bands, who are also super special but not secret, are Dooms de Pop, Skinny Jimmy and the Stingrays, and the Instant Whips.
Will any of those bands be joined by Iggy Pop or some other unannounced legends? It could happen. It's likely that some interesting old-school South Florida musicians will be strolling over to the Poorhouse after the Invisible Bands screening and concert earlier in the night at Cinema Paradiso.
Perhaps some well-connected friend of IWAN is planning to make the anniversary party extra special -- Iggy special. Perhaps not. We'll have to live in suspense at least until the clock strikes 12 on Saturday night.
Whatever happens, or doesn't, the event ought to be a good time. The promise of performances from the bands listed above should be enough to bring you out to see what else may go down.
Here's a clip of one of them, Dooms de Pop:
