The Broward Sheriff's Office announced over the weekend that Deputy Daniel Rivera succumbed to the injuries he suffered when his squad car veered off I-95 and crashed into a tree last Wednesday morning.
Rivera was pronounced dead at 10:20 p.m. Saturday at Broward Health North hospital, according to the BSO.
He was 32.
Rivera's smashed car was spotted by a BSO communications training specialist on his way to work early Wednesday.
Rivera was reportedly attempting to take the exit from southbound I-95 onto Atlantic Boulevard when his car veered off the road and hit a tree. Accident investigators determined that Rivera was driving in wet conditions when attempting to hit the brakes and lost control of his vehicle.
Rivera's family is "grateful for the outpouring of support during this difficult time," [sheriff's spokeswoman] Veda Coleman-Wright said in an emailed statement. "We ask that you continue to pray for Rivera's family and his BSO family."
"Our entire agency is feeling the loss of this young, brave deputy who was taken too soon from his family, friends and coworkers," Sheriff Scott Israel said in a press release. "I am praying for Deputy Rivera's family to find comfort and strength during this time."
Rivera started his career at BSO in 2003 as a Department of Detention deputy. In 2002, he transferred to the Department of Law Enforcement. He had been assigned to the Pompano Beach district.
