Rick Scott officially kicked off his tour of Florida car dealerships reelection campaign yesterday at a Volkswagen dealership in Jacksonville. He and some Republican supporters chanted his campaign slogan, "Let's keep working!"
Today at noon, when Scott comes to an AutoNation dealership in Greenacres, a grassroots group called Florida for All plans to publicly remind Scott that continuing to work is a necessity, not a choice, for the minimum-wage workers making $7.93 an hour.
Florida for All has been publicizing Scott's quote saying that he "cringes" when he hears calls to raise the minimum wage.
In January, Scott told the Tampa Bay Times, "When I hear a politician say that we have to raise the minimum wage so working families can make ends meet, I cringe, because I know that statement is a lie. Even if we did raise the minimum wage, working families will still not be able to make ends meet on those jobs. We need good jobs that lead to good careers for our families, and that's what I am focused on."
An event announcement for today's protest says that the Democratic state representative from Lantana, Lori Berman, "will join local education and health activists... Scott will claim that 'help is on the way' even though he failed to pass any meaningful initiatives this session that would have benefited struggling Floridians.
"While Scott has been claiming "victory," protesters will remind him that almost a million Floridians are still without life-saving health coverage, that he's failed to deliver on promises of job creation, that per-pupil education spending is still below prerecession levels, and that his "tax cuts" are being funded by an increase of nearly $400 million in property taxes."
The address for the event is AutoNation Chevrolet Dealership, 5757 Lake Worth Road, Greenacres 33463. Protesters will gather on the sidewalk.
Scott will also be speaking later today in Miami at 5:30 p.m. at -- you guessed it -- a Buick GMC.
