A teenage girl was shot Friday morning near Watkins Elementary School on 3520 SW 52nd Ave. in West Park.

According to police, the girl, who is believed to be 15 or 16, was taken to Jackson North hospital by a family member. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The teen is not a student at Watkins Elementary.

The Broward Sheriff's Office says the shooting occurred Friday morning just before dawn, at around 6:30 a.m. They also said via an email statement that the shooting was not school related in any way.

Just after police were called, Watkins Elementary shut down surrounding streets in South Broward morning.

Police reportedly chased the suspect and an arrest was made on I-95 near Oakland Park Boulevard.

The BSO's Violent Crimes unit remains at the scene as they conduct an investigation.
