Back in December, a jury found Tamarac Commissioner "Positively Patte" Atkins-Grad not guilty on bribery, official misconduct, receiving unlawful compensation, and conspiring to commit unlawful compensation charges after she threw herself one helluva of an election victory party.
But that didn't stop a recall committee's door-to-door campaign of gathering signatures to have her removed from office.
And now it appears that that little drive was a success, as Atkins-Grad has been officially recalled, following a released certification from Tamarac City Clerk Patricia Teufel.
The Recall Committee, a bipartisan, self-funded group, is now a part of Broward County history by being the first to successfully recall an elected official by petition.
The committee, which has been on a crusade to have Atkins-Grad booted from office, needed 1,875 signed petitions to meet its goal.
It blew it out by 421, turning in a certified 2,296 signatures to the Supervisor of Elections Office.
Atkins-Grad had tried to stop the recall in court but was shot down by a judge. She has since appealed that ruling.
"The sweat, sunburn, time, and exercise will be worth the effort once we have honest and effective leadership in the District 2 commissioner's chair again," said Recall volunteer Walter Morris.
This was the group's second try at a recall and, as the they put it, their volunteers were committed to making sure Atkins-Grad got recalled from office. They fell 18 signatures shy in their first attempt.
Now Atkins-Grad will be served with the recall and will have five days to either resign or wait for a recall election, which would go down in 30 days.
