Jack Mancini's namesake restaurant on East Las Olas Boulevard was a rare, long-standing institution on a street where some restaurants depart faster than visiting tourists.
After a decade in business Mancini's closed its doors in 2011 when the 10-year lease expired. After trying his hand at a short-lived tapas-and-cocktails concept called M Bar, Mancini went back to Italian roots, sort of.
He moved to the west end of Las Olas, and opened Mancini's Modern Italian in February in the the former Rossopomodoro space in the same building as Grille 401.
The menu offers many of the Italian classics we come to expect, as well as some more creative dishes inspired by Mancini's travels to culinary capitals like New York City and San Francisco.
Mancini said he's betting on this side of the street, where the surrounding high rises casts long shadows even on sunny days. On a Tuesday night, hundreds of well-dressed, 30-something professionals with drinks in hand were spilling out of YOLO onto its terrace. A matte-black Lamborghini Gallardo and Porsche Turbo sat menacingly in its driveway.
Mancini's instinct to move "where all the energy is" might pay off in the long run, but some of the restaurant's culinary experimenting didn't seem as poised to hit it big.
