The Slow Food movement has been gathering steam for quite some time now. With 80,000 members divided into 140 local chapters in 50 countries, it's kind of a big deal.
Starting Saturday, Slow Foods Glades to Coast is sponsoring a week of events for Eat Slow - Eat Local. Check out the schedule after the jump.
Saturday, March 30
Delray Beach Green Market, 150 E. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach.
Starting at 11 a.m., the organization is holding its event launch for Eat Slow-Eat Local week. Chef Damon Adams will begin with a cooking demonstration, including samples. At 11:30 a.m., Rick Raid of Seed to Bloom, a local company specializing in organic cut flowers, will host a presentation on the challenges of growing in South Florida.
Sunday, April 1
Rare Fruit and Vegetable Council of Broward County, 3425 College Ave., Davie.
Noel Ramos of the, is going to explore the fruit and culture of Puerto Rico. Starting at 7:30 p.m., Ramos will be presenting a powerpoint entitled, "Puerto Rico Safari #2 Summer 2012," which highlights his discoveries while visiting the island last summer. Expect to try samples of rare fruit.
Saturday, April 6
Miramar Community Garden, 3700 Largo Dr., Miramar.
From 9 to 10 a.m, the group will be hosting a tour of the garden. Visitors will get the opportunity to explore the garden's unique method by examining the pros and cons of growing in bags--rather than raised beds--and process of growing together as a community, rather than in individual plots. After the tour, produce from the garden will be available for purchase.
Lake Worth Farmer's Market, 1 S. Ocean Blvd., Lake Worth.
Organic Methods for Vegetable Gardening in Florida, author Melissa Contreras will be holding a book signing at the Lake Worth Farmer's Market from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In celebration of the event, the market manager will be selling locally-made cakes.
Wellington Green Market, 10300 W. Forest Hill Rd., Wellington.
Starting at 11:30 a.m., Rick Raid of Seed to Bloom will be presenting on home gardens.
Sunday, April 7
Miramar Memorial Farmer's Market, 1901 SW 172 Ave., Miramar.
Beginning at 11:30 a.m., Chef Luci of Elle's Restaurant & Lounge, will be hosting a cooking demonstration with fresh produce from the downtown Fort Lauderdale Farm, Fort Lauderdale Vegetables. The demonstration will include samples of the dish or dishes prepared.
Marando Farms, 1401 SW First Ave., Fort Lauderdale.
From 2 to 3 p.m., Chelsea Marando will be hosting a tour of the urban farm and market. Afterwards, Melissa Contreras, author of Organic Methods for Vegetable Gardening in Florida, will be presenting.
Tap 42, 1411 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale.
Around 4 p.m., the group will walk the short block from Marando Farms to Tap 42 to relax and enjoy a local beer.
