Boca's reputation as a place for old rich people to live out their final days on gated golf courses makes it easy to forget that the city is home to a major university. And wherever there are college kids, there's a thirst for cheap beer and plenty of it. Enter the Night Owl Boca, a sporty bar that opened in December just minutes from the Florida Atlantic University campus.

The new bar is a part of Florida Entertainment Specialists' (FES) portfolio. The group operates a handful of college-friendly bars in the state, including The Attic and Knight Library in Orlando and 509 in Daytona. Logan Berkowitz, a managing partner for FES, said the Night Owl Boca will cater to older college students and graduate students, as well as alumni and young professionals.

Night Owl Boca is located in an "older plaza" near a busy intersection on Federal Highway and Northeast 20th Street. The space was formerly occupied by TJ Murphy's Bar & Grill, which Berkowitz said "was a popular for a bit" before it showed drastic signs of wear and tear. When FES initially took over the space, they'd projected a minor facelift, but soon discovered that it needed a major overhaul.

"We had to gut the place and redo it," Berkowitz said.

Everything, from the bathrooms to the cooler to the bar, has been redone, so much so that Berkowitz said anyone who was familiar with the previous establishment would "be shocked" at the transformation.

The bar is outfitted with numerous televisions that will broadcast fights, football, and other popular events. In addition to liquid refreshments and specials -- including late night specials starting at 9 p.m. and half-off tabs from 4 to 7 p.m. daily -- the bar will offer a small menu of "pub grub with a little bit of a twist."

Night Owl Boca is located at 497 Northeast 20th Street in Boca Raton. Their initial hours are set for 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday and 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Call 561-245-1048.
