Healthy lifestyles are a lot easier to maintain when you've got a team of people cheering you on -- hence the popularity of Weight Watchers meetings and Crossfit boxes.
So if you need a little extra motivation to stay meat-free and on the move, the No Meat Athlete run group is probably a perfect fit. The fitness and social group, which has branches all over the country, recently launched a Miami arm.
This Sunday, it's hosting a run and brunch outing in Fort Lauderdale, so Broward County is getting a little love too.
The group is affiliated with No Meat Athlete, the popular blog run by athlete Matt Frazier. Last year, Frazier asked his followers to start running groups in their hometowns. Alexander Ruiz stepped up to launch one in Miami.
"I volunteered to become one of the group leaders for the Miami affiliate because I wanted to meet like-minded individuals and help build this community of plant-based athletes and help bring awareness to this lifestyle," says Ruiz. "There are over 75 No Meat Athlete running groups around the nation and across the world. No Meat Athlete - Miami currently has about 78 members."
The group is open to all: vegans, vegetarians, veg-curious, whatever.
"The great thing about No Meat Athlete Miami is that all skill levels are welcome," Ruiz adds. "We have first-timers, experienced marathoners, weekend warriors, and those folks who are dusting off their old running shoes again. We don't leave anyone behind."
This Sunday, the group will take on a three-mile run starting at the Fort Lauderdale Beach Park, followed by brunch at plant-based hot spotGreen Bar Kitchen.
"Green Bar has been kind enough to open early just for us, and they have special little surprises in store for our group," says Ruiz.
You can check out the event details on Facebook. The group will meet in the parking lot of the beach across the street from the Bahia Mar Hotel at 8 a.m. The outing is free and open to everyone, although you'll have to pay for your own postrun brunch.
