A BSO detention deputy driving his personal vehicle fatally hit a pedestrian near a Motel 6 in Pompano Beach.

According to BSO: "Detention Deputy Timothy Rolle was driving his personal car, a black 2014 4-door Infinity, travelling north on N.W. 31 Ave. when his vehicle struck a man, Jerome Byrd, in the roadway near 1201 N.W. 31 Ave. in Pompano Beach. It is unclear why the pedestrian was in the road; he was not near a crosswalk or intersection at the time of the accident."

Byrd, a Pompano Beach resident, was 60-years-old. Rolle has been on the BSO force since 2007.

The Pompano Beach Fire Rescue team responded to the scene, and the incident will be investigated by the traffic homicide team.

The address where the incident occurred is that of a Motel 6, but an employee for the motel says the victim was not a guest.

Rolle was returning from a break in his shift at the North Broward Bureau detention facility, which is near the scene of the accident. He was not injured.
