The deal: This Mediterranean market in Fort Lauderdale has a full-service deli that makes excellent sandwiches with fresh cold cuts.
What you get: Each sandwich costs around $8 and is
huge, with fresh-baked bread and plenty of gourmet toppings. The meat
is all Boar’s Head too. When you get your sandwich at Fernanda’s, you
take it to one of the many
mosaic-tiled tables near the market’s wine isle.
We tried: The New Orleans-style muffuletta comes on sesame-seed
bread like the original version from Central Grocery. It had an
inch of salami and capacolla and a few slices of dry
provolone cheese. I could’ve done without the lettuce and tomato, but
the marinated olive salad that Fernanda’s makes in-house was excellent.
A Sicilian sub comes with basil and tomato with fresh mozzarella
cheese. Grab a frosty Dr. Brown’s
soda from the nearby self-service drink cooler to go with your sub.
Bonus points: If you’re not in the mood for sandwiches,
Fernanda’s prepared-food case is on the east side of the market and has
everything from salads to marinated mushrooms and chicken Milanese.
