No. 90: Pork Buns From Umi Fish Bar + Grill
It goes without saying that South Florida summers will be brutally hot and grindingly humid, that the weasels up in Tallahassee will stuff themselves with corporate cash like a bunch of human piñatas, and that anyone hungry for better-than-mediocre dim sum would probably have more luck finding snowmen on Ocean Drive.
Umi Fish Bar is no dim sum house, but you couldn’t tell by its
Chinese-style pork buns, light and fluffy pillows stuffed with chunks of
sweet-tangy-bacony Duroc (a heritage breed of pig) pork belly that
fully live up to the English translation of dim sum–“touch the heart.”
Of course, this being the USofA, where nothing succeeds like excess,
there’s a bit of gilt sent out with this lily–little puddles of fiery
sriracha and hoisin sauces, plus house-made pickles to cut that porky
richness. Sadly, though, South Florida summers will still be brutal, and
the Tallahassee weasels will continue to give greed a bad name.
