Since the Obamas have patronized Spike Mendelsohn‘s We,The Pizza, Serious Eats scouts out whether it’s good and discovers otherwise: “It’s still bad pizza,” they report. (I’d second. It’s not great.) When it comes to pizza, be wary of Chicagoans.
In other news,

on N. Clematis Street, West Palm will score the third Grimaldi’s location in Florida, a descendant of the original from Brooklyn. The owners seem to believe that a factor in what makes New York pizza so great is the water, so they’ve hired a chemist “to analyze and recreate the mineral content and exact composition of the water to ensure the dough tastes the same in Florida,” reported Newswire PR Today
Seems a lot of effort when it’s already been proven that New York water is irrelevant. (Besides. Even New York gastronome Jeffrey Steingarten says the best pizza is at Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix.) Grimaldi’s has expanded beyond Brooklyn and Florida to Phoenix, Tuscon, Vegas,Reno, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, and. . . a bunch of other places in Texas. The chain announced plans for the Florida location on August 25th, with an opening date to be determined.
Mark the calendar: On Labor Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.,Nick’s New Haven-Style Pizzeria & Bar in Boca Raton is giving away slices of apizza (pronounced a-BEETS) in honor of its grand opening at Glades Plaza. 2240 NW 19th Street. 561-368-2900. One slice per person.
