The burgers at this retro, West Coast-style joint come wrapped up in wax paper like a classic ’50s burger shack. Not only is it cute but functional: The paper keeps the grease from dripping down your hands, allowing you to enjoy your fully decked-out, double-patty sandwich without getting too messy. California Burger also serves some mean French fries that are hand-cut with the skin on. They’re soaked ahead of time to crisp up nicely and made-to-order. Even better are the shakes, which are rich and thick and made with fresh vanilla ice cream. Since the place is located just a few blocks from the beach off of Sunrise Boulevard, the “Surfin’ USA” theme fits just fine. This is one burger shack where swim trunks are totally acceptable.
