Remember Garbage Island — that floating, toxic mass of plastics rumored to be twice the size of Texas? Yeah, well it’s still out there swimming somewhere between San Francisco and Hawaii and getting bigger every day. If this isn’t enough to make you want to go postal the next time someone asks if you want paper or plastic, know that there are some things you can do to get involved. Take the Surfrider Foundation. The collective of surfers, moms, environmentalists, and impassioned activists makes the prevention of ocean pollution its mission with several events aimed at educating the public against plastics. This Thursday, join the Surfrider Foundation members as they host “Pints Against Plastics” at Longboards (519 Clematis St., West Palm Beach).

The event is part of the national RAPtoberfest (Rise Against Plastics) campaign and will include a two-for-one happy hour from 6 to 8 p.m., a 20 percent discount off of food, a surfboard raffle, surf videos, and membership enrollment for Surfrider Foundation newbies. Since it’s “Pints Against Plastics,” the event will be completely plastic-free, so settle in and get your drink to stay. Click here for more info.
