Rhino Doughnuts & Coffee

Warning: This is not your daddy's doughnut shop. At Rhino Doughnuts & Coffee, these iconic American pastries come with hunks of crisp, caramelized applewood bacon, homemade jams, and handmade custards boiled down nightly from fresh vanilla beans and real maple syrup. Kid-approved selections include a rainbow-colored M&M take with smooth chocolate layered atop the ring-shaped doughnut. You can get it with Snickers, Milky Way, and Nestle Crunch. Decadent? Yes. But that's what Rhino is all about, according to owners Athan "Tom" Prakas and David Tran. The first location in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea (there are four more scheduled to open), Rhino is diving headfirst into the national craze of artisanal doughnuts. Pastry chef Keith Freiman -- a Smith & Wollensky, Philippe Chow, and Boca Resort alum -- makes everything from scratch. He has even created his own spin on a doughnut-croissant hybrid, which he dubbed the Rhino Horn. And the coffee is just as important. For nine months, Tran and Prakas visited microroasters around the country to find one that could create the perfect signature blend. After lots of trial and error, they eventually settled on a roaster from Boston that created blends to suit each of their palates.
