7 "Cool Dad" Things to Do This Weekend

Father's Day is this weekend, and we can't ignore one obvious fact: Moms are so much easier to shop for. With stores pushing handyman products and fishing gear in your face, it's frustrating because hey, not all fathers are into repairing stuff or sitting on a boat all day holding a still rod. Some dads are, well, cool.

So, for all you with different dads out there, we conducted extensive research (a.k.a. Facebook stalked) to find out what fun, cheap things are happening in BroCo and West Palm this weekend. Sons and daughters, take note. Maybe your type of pops is on this list. And remember: Put down the socks. He's got enough.

1. Tattoo Dad

All day. Friday, June 13. True Love Tattoo Studio. 1400 N. State Road 7, Margate. Visit Facebook.

You want to show your dad you forever care about him, and what better way than with a $13, Friday the 13th tattoo? Both you and pops can get matching ones from a template of already drawn tats, making the decision process even easier for you guys. Just make sure you're down with "forever" -- nothing is scarier than a permanent piece of ink you hate, aside from perhaps Jason Voorhees himself.

2. Dad of Darkness

Black Friday with DJs Deadhead, LinderSMASH, and Lorenzo DjKaos Fernandez. 10 p.m., Friday, June 13. Bar Stache 1920's Drinking Den, 109 SW Second Ave., Fort Lauderdale. 21+ only. Visit Facebook.

Tell daddy to trade in his pastel polos and work pants for some killer black duds (bonus points for piercings and weirdly coiffed hair). Stache's Black Friday celebrates Friday, June 13 with DJ Deadhead, whose description on the interweb sates that he is "supplying you with the perfect soundtrack for your funeral." It's not every day that Stache brings that much darkness, so if you have a dad who favors night over day, this is the Father's Day party for you all.

3. Rockabilly Dad

Hukilau. 6 p.m., Friday, June 13. Mai-Kai Restaurant and Lounge, 3599 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. No cover. Visit Facebook.

Despite talk of this being its final year, the annual tiki celebration Hukilau will not die. Celebrate the dad who loves cuffed pants, tropical tops, or pompadours in South Seas style this weekend by sipping on tropical cocktails out of coconuts or oddly shaped god-heads.

A large variety of musical acts will be featured, including the the Disasternauts and the Sweet Hollywaiians who travelled all the way from Japan to play. There will also be symposiums by tattooist Paul Roe, author Philip Greene, and historian Jeff "Beachbum" Berry. You can even grab dad a souvenir in the Bahia Mar's giant Commodore Ballroom, which will be filled with tons of merch.

4. Artsy Fartsy Dad

Sacred Hearts. 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15. Coastars Coffee Bar, 12 S. J. Street, Lake Worth. Visit Facebook.

Mixed in with all the drinks and debauchery going on this weekend is a more sophisticated event for daddy-o. Sure, he may be fartsy, but is he artsy fartsy?

Artist Rolando Chang Barrero will be displaying his Sacred Hearts series which explores religious symbolism. But don't worry, it ain't preachy. Boca band Rat's Mouth will be performing at 9, so you'll have a chance to jam after sipping on delicious cups of joe and checking out art dad and you will both enjoy.

5. Rock Star Dad

Decades Records Showcase. 9 p.m., Saturday, June 14. Respectable Street. 518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach. No cover. Visit Facebook.

Rodney Mayo's Decades Records will be hosting its first showcase with a musical extravaganza at Respectable Street. Shows on two stages will feature musical acts Astrea Corp, Jean Jacket, Symbols, Gravel Kings, the Band in Heaven, and Wake Up. Feed your dad's inner rock star by buying him $5 drinks from the special drink menu created just for this event.

Warning: He may just play air guitar and embarrass you. But it's Father's Day, so chill, smile, and excuse yourself for a bathroom break.

6. Skater Dad

Circus Bowl Jam: Bowls, Boards, and Babes! 8 p.m., Saturday, June 14. Circus Bowl, behind the Circus Bar, 1461 SW 30 Ave., Pompano Beach. No cover. Visit Facebook.

Watch out, Tony Hawk, skater dad is coming through! Let your papa regress to his 12-year-old skater self at the Circus Bowl this weekend. The day features skate contests with cash prizes.

When you get tired of watching dad fall down, you can catch performances by local bands Fotre, the Talking Dogs, and Knife Fight. You may want to bring an ice pack in case your dad bruises his ego, um, knee.

7. Soccer Dad

All weekend at American Social, 721 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Visit americansocialbar.com.

World Cup kicked off yesterday, so with the disappointments of the NBA Finals, this whole weekend is going to be chockfull of sports.

If your dad is the one who yelled at you to "hustle!" when you were 7 and covered in green stains rushing to make a goal, then you should probably bring him to American Social to watch the World Cup. There will be food specials themed around the team's countries, depending on the scheduled day and themed drink specials to match. Soccer Mom is more than welcome to join in the fun too, but it's time to let soccer dad have his weekend, with or without the minivan and cooler filled with CapriSun.
