Album release shows are generally the best kind of shows, because they bring out the finest in the bands. That vibe usually permeates through the crowd, and great energy prevails.
However, when the show celebrates the birth of two records, you'd better believe it's going to be proper party. Hollyweird's favored sonic exports, Beach Day and Mr. Entertainment and the Pookiesmackers, will be welcoming their respective fresh sounds to the world with a joint blowout at Hollywood Beach's seaside bandshell.
Beach Day will be celebrating its highly anticipated debut full-length, Trip Trap Attack, released by the taste-making Kanine label (Grizzly Bear, the Depreciation Guild). It will undoubtedly be a lovely spin through the group's lush, Spector-informed harmonies and hazy summer anthems.
Mr. Entertainment and the Pookiesmackers, Hollywood's rock 'n' roll elder statesmen, are putting out a single entitled "Tropical Diseases." It's a spacey number painted in the finest colors of the '60s with a touch of psychedelica, and humor added for good measure. The single features a B-side of underground Florida classic "The Little Black Egg" and was pressed nicely on vinyl by Ho-Town Records.
Beach Day and Mr. Entertainment and the Pookiesmackers. 7 p.m., Saturday, June 29, at Hollywood Beach Bandshell, Johnson St. and the Broadwalk, 314 Hollywood. Event is free. Call 954-921-3404.
