Good Karma

It’s about time Fort Lauderdale embraced some of the beat-driven culture for which Miami is heralded. Thanks to the residents of Karma Lounge, dance music’s been revived in an area usually blessed (more accurately, cursed) with commercial trance and 99 JAMZ hip-hop. DJ Sean Weeks, a Chicago native, along with partner DJ Blue, has been catering to the frenetic drum ‘n’ bass crowd with a weekly D’n’B Basic night on Wednesdays. Every Friday, Chris Nandez ushers in house beats at Karma that reverberate through the Riverfront area with the Traffic crew, which also includes Weeks.

Once a staple at the beachfront Lush Lounge, this group of Broward-based DJs has provided a groove-rich alternative to the top 40 machismo that permeates the downtown area. Along with national acts from Tarantella to local-boy-done-good Austin Leeds, Karma’s crew and crowd fits right into the club’s lush, spacious quarters. Forget the sausage fest that encompasses most of downtown. For the nightlife that brings the underground sound above, get what you have coming at Karma.

Check out Wednesdays and Fridays every week at Karma Lounge, 4 W. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-523-7159.
