Breyan Isaac

In a surprising change from its usual highfalutin programming, this Broward Center-affiliated venue on the Nova Southeastern University campus gives itself over Friday night to local hip-hop. The star of the event is 954 rapper Breyan Isaac, who celebrates the release of his album Extraordinarily Average. Luckily, the CD is more than its name implies. Songs like "Ballin" are your usual commercial hip-hop pop fare full of Auto-tuned hooks, but it's when you get past the obvious singles that Isaac's material gets interesting. "Shake It Off," for instance, is built on an old-school R&B swing, full of brass and a driving chorus that sounds almost ready for a musical. It's this, and the more orthodox but uptempo dance numbers, that should carry him through a show in a staid theater full of bolted-down seats.
