Black is not back, because it never left. Daysleeper ensures that South Floridians who like Ian Curtis and gazing at their shoes shall not be left wanting for the appropriate soundtrack. The band, which formed in Miami circa 1999, combines obvious postpunk and new wave influences with a feel for ambiance that enriches its overall sound by providing a rich textural foundation — and just the right amount of space.
These latter two elements set it apart from the typical postpunk outfit and earned it a Best Band 2009 nomination from the local music scene website Queen of the Scene (queenofthescene.com). Also on the bill is local electro-rock duo the Nothing Left, featuring knife-in-heart, grungy vocals coming at the listener and backed by an angry keyboard and guitar attack. The other opener, Inasmuch, will warm up with a slightly brighter variety of the dark-by-nature, ’80s-inspired postpunk music.
