Feeling Arie

India.Arie made it clear with her 2001 hit, "Video:" "I am not the average girl from your video." Far from it: the 29-year-old songstress is a Grammy winner and one of the reigning queens of neo-soul, sprinkling the classic sound of Motown with a twist of modern hip-hop. Living in Atlanta since age 13 has given Arie a portal into that town's famous music scene, and she's bringing a taste of it on a national tour this winter. Her honest lyrics tell tales from her experiences, and her tranquil vibe, paired with her unique melodies, come off like listening to a close friend's heartfelt stories. Arie's latest effort, I Am Not My Hair, is no exception, documenting her time spent visiting AIDS victims in Kenya earlier this year. The album won't be released until December 6, but you can get a sneak preview of Arie's self-described "acoustic soul" this weekend.

India.Arie plays at 8 p.m. Friday, December 2, at the Carefree Theater, 2000 S. Dixie Hwy., West Palm Beach. Tickets cost $42.50. Call 561-833-7305.
