Glam-A-THON "Divas Don't Sweat, They Strut" During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

We've been noticing plenty of Glam-a-THON events around town in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Fort Lauderdale org, which hopes to "kiss breast cancer goodbye" celebrated the prohibition era preview opening of Stache (formerly Green Room), and last Friday, it was all pink and glitter at Passion Nightclub at Hard Rock.

The extravaganza at Passion, called Lipstick Lounge, was sponsored by Tap 42, Stache, and other desirable spots around town. Intricately decorated, sweets filled the tables, people milled around waiting for free tequila samples, or they hovered by stations to get their complimentary nail gems, pink hair extensions, and pink eyelashes.

As she was putting in a hair extension, Nina Hallick from the Elite Group Hair & Color Studio said, "Pink is a powerful symbol. It's our version of the pink ribbon. We are able to raise awareness through something fun."

Glamorous girls strutted around in pink tutus carrying glittery shoes and shirtless men had Glam-A-THON logos on their bods. A silent auction involving prizes like a Dwyane Wade jersey and massage packages set the stage for giving.

Our personal favorite, however, was the homage to the infamous Fifty Shades of Grey craze: two half-naked men with riding crops, feathery boas, and other kinky props allowed women to take a pictures with them for the mere price of $5. The name of the sexual photoshoot was appropriately titled Fifty Shades of Pink.

Tammy Gail, founder of Glam-a-THON is an example of a woman who takes life's setbacks with positivity. Gail was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and started Glam-A-THON three years after. Since then, this girly group raised $200,000 and given these funds to the Broward Health Foundation. Gail says the goal is to assist women who are underserved or underinsured and who need help with family tasks they can no longer do, like watch their children.

"It's amazing to help people in need financially, but an entire community helps each other besides just writing a check," said Gail. "It's empowering for me and everyone involved."

Gail also said Glam-A-THON stands out from the other breast cancer organizations because it "celebrates being a woman." She added that after losing her hair to chemo, it was a learning experience. "You learn everything that's identified as a woman. It's a blessing... Not everything revolves around you. You take yourself out of the equation."

Glam-A-THON will have an event at Esplanade Park on Saturday, October 13; but instead of your average 5K, it's a strut. Glamorous divas adorned in stilettos and other fabulous attire will try to impress the celebrity judging panel in order to win a Glam-A-THON crown. Four teams are eligible to be crowned the Glam Queen by raising the most money through registrations and donations. Like Gail said, "We are the only pageant where you can buy your crown. Divas don't sweat, they strut."

Glam-A-THON has also teamed up with other organizations like Cruise Voyant who is giving people a chance to win a free cruise for two by submitting a story about being affected by breast cancer on their Facebook page. Glam-A-THON will also receive 5 percent of Cruise Voyant profits this month.
