Hoobastank

It's said that the best way to be heard is to be misunderstood. Who gets more press than an intentionally vague artist? If this approach works, it might be the only explanation for the cataclysmic success of Hoobastank. The first time their music echoed out of your stereo, maybe there was some passive interest, but it wasn't until you heard their name that the intrigue rabbit punched its way into your brain. You listened to their mid-tempo rockers, repeating the name like a mantra: Hoobastank, Hoobastank, Hoobastank. You tried to picture what, exactly, a Hoobastank looks like. What does it do? Where does it come from?

Apparently it's a couple of white guys from Southern California who write bubble-gummy pop songs and are destined to become adult contemporary rock gods. I suggest you grab a teenager so you'll have a reasonable excuse to find out exactly where the 'Stank is coming from.

Hoobastank plays at 8 p.m. Saturday, February 18, at the Pompano Beach Amphitheatre, 1806 NE Sixth St., Pompano Beach. Tickets are $25. Call 954-946-2402.
